What We Do
At Stories Beyond Service, our mission is simple: to give Veterans the space and support to share their stories—honestly, creatively, and on their own terms. Each story is crafted with care, respect, and authenticity to honor the experiences of those who have served.
Connecting With Veterans
Every story begins with connection. We work with Veterans across Minnesota, through local nonprofits, veteran resource centers, and community partners to identify individuals who are ready to share their journey beyond military service. Participation is always voluntary, and we take great care to create a safe, comfortable environment for storytelling.
The Storytelling Process
Once a Veteran chooses to participate, we collaborate to bring their story to life.
This process may include:

A pre-interview to learn more about their background, interests, and message

A recorded interview or short documentary session

Optional photography or creative visual storytelling components

Guidance and support from our trauma-informed team to ensure comfort throughout the process
Every story is told with the Veteran, not about them. Our approach focuses on authenticity and respect.
Production & Editing
Our team, made up of Veterans and storytellers, handles filming, editing, and production. We strive to maintain each story’s integrity, keeping the focus on real voices and lived experiences rather than scripted narratives. Veterans are then invited to review and approve their story before it’s shared and archived.
Sharing the Stories
Once completed, stories are featured on the Stories Beyond Service website, social media, and at various community events.
Each story is also archived to maintain story integrity for future generations.
Our goal is to foster understanding, connection, and hope, showing the world that service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off. We also collaborate with local organizations, schools, and veteran support programs to present these stories as part of public awareness campaigns, workshops, and events.
